It is probably fair to say that the fortified wine segment is a little bit old fashioned and dull. However I think this is about to change, and Spodee could be the changeling! The new brand on the block is the brainchild of the brand owners of Hendrick’s gin and Sailor Jerry Rum, so expectations are high! What is so interesting about this product is that it’s something that was born during the great depression and comprises of spiced mixed fortified wine with moonshine – wow!
It is 18% ABV and can be used neat or as a mixer, so the usage is something that is quite different to the conventions of the category. The other great thing is that the brand has launched with a view to break all the visual rules of the category too. It’s available in a milk bottle format and looks more like it belongs with chilled fruit juices rather than the traditional sherry and ports. It is currently being launched in the US with aspirations to go further afield if it’s a success.
